Dimensions 44.45 × 45.72 cm (Acc. No. 1990-16-17)
This object from the collection of the Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a patterned textile fragment featuring camelid hair supplementary weft designs on a plain weave ground. Divided into four quadrants, the design includes stylized monkeys in geometric rows and bird motifs inside a central pink rhombus.
The textile was assessed in 2022 as being in fair condition. The foundation remained flexible with intact patterning, though surface distortion, internal losses, tangled yarns, and multiple taped and glued patches were noted.
Treatment included removal from the support fabric, photographic documentation, surface cleaning under low suction, and careful humidification using Reemay and Gore-Tex. Tape and foreign patches were removed mechanically with heat and microtools. Displaced fragments were repositioned, stitched, or stabilized on new silk crepeline or toned cotton supports.
Custom-toned inserts were added for structural and visual integration.
