This object is a plaster cast from the historic collection at City and Guilds, which is used by carving students for drawing and modelling. The brief was to clean it and secure it if necessary to be used in the drawing studio. The project involved: taking photographs in reflective white light and UV light; conducting a condition report; and finalising treatment.
Challenge: To design a mount that could allow students to observe the object at various angles while keeping it safe..
Treatment:
- Dry and wet cleaning with non polar solvents, taking care to avoid over cleaning.
- Removal of accretions such as plasticine and other material that had accumulated during years of use.
- Design and construction of mount. The design was developed in consultation with carving tutors and students.
